It does NOT work so well in short stories.
I’m not the biggest fan of stort stories but these were just all so dull. Woman at berbhard Gas Station The ending made me sad even though I knew it was going to happen hint…the title. But I liked Bernhard’s style of writing.
The ending surprised me! However I really loved how Sugar Peas ended. Bernard Schlink is a remarkably fine story teller. First serial to the New Yorker.
I don’t think I’ll be reading any of his books in the furture.

Yet, marking its second anniversary in government this month, the junior coalition partner’s dark star seems only to be on the rise. Feb 26, Beernhard rated it it was amazing Shelves: Hardcoverpages. Some stories explore cultural identity in love relationships. Tilting at national mythologies has been an obsession, whether they be myths of postwar absolution, an imperial past of “balls and waltzes”, or an idyllic Alpine homeland – beautifully parodied in Margit Schreiner’s “The Kargeralm Shepherd”, in which a rustic falls in “tragic love” with a sheep.
Not my favorite of Schlink’s work – long short stories, very bleak.
