I thought the advice was well thought-out and communicated concisely.
I think this is the real reason why I can’t give the book more than 3 stars. New Rules For Success. Nevertheless, I think this a great book for a new graduate, along with Effectively Immediately by Emily Bennington another blogger I like. It also clarified some things about office life that I knew but didn’t want to admit, mostly that being stellar at your job won’t necessarily land you the plum assignments, and it solidified my distaste for top-down corporate structure.

The best example is the chapter called “Use sexual harassment to boost your career”. Penelope Trunk, expert business advice columnist for the Boston Globe, gives anything but standard advice to help members of the X and Y generations succeed on their own terms in any industry. Gives an insightful perspective on how to handle office politics. Then set up a personal list of libraries from your profile page by clicking on your user name at the top right of any screen.

She uses that hook to make a valuable point about the importance of taking time to think big thoughts but still: Hmmm a lot of re-iterating the same ideas — some of which seem to be common knowledge for those of us who have interviewed, quit, got fired, and navigated through the social ladder at work. And we have an outlook and set of priorities that makes many of the old rules for career success outdated and irrelevant. I should pause to say I do have a wonderful big sister but she’s on a totally different career track in a different industry.
