Just down the street from the camp where I stayed, they let me handle an incredible kind of explosive propane fire throwing gun that was absolutely incredible! It’s great to be able to highlight the work done by special effects artists, who are usually the unsung heroes of animation — if their work is good, nobody notices!
These are stuff like breaking branches, falling leaves, moving fabric, crumbling clay, etc. I am starting with simpler work, no huge back pieces or highly complex tattoos for the first couple of months, but jospeh skill level has definitely reached the point where I am more than comfortable tattooing a wide range of designs. Even if there are other giland effects books out there, this one definitely stands on its own. Maybe a large part of it is that I was looking for something in this book that it wasn’t intended for.
I hypothesize in my second book that much of the art deco decorative artwork that flourished in the mid-twentieth century was heavily influenced by a study of nature, and natural elements such as smoke, fire, water and all things moving. The information was there but it was a bit frustrating to read, which is why I don’t really look at this book favourably. Elemental Magic: The Art of Special Effects Animation by Joseph Gilland
Remarkably, I have taken my Elemental Magic animation workshops down the exact same path that science has taken, engaging my participants in elemfntal, real-time physics experiments in order to better understand the dynamics we wish elemenntal achieve in our animated visual effects.
His film, “Prelude to Eden” is a brilliantly drawn and timed exercise in drawn effects animation. There’s no rules to it, yet it’s even more closely linked to the study of the natural world. Throughout the book, there are a lot of detailed explanation on how different elements and objects interact with one another. However, this person, while knowledgeable, isn’t a good instructor.

Elemental Magic: The Art of Special Effects Animation
I felt like the information wasn’t presented in a good way. Still others are purely decorative in nature, but still leaning towards an ‘Elemental Magic’ kind of a look, focusing on elemental energies as the driving force behind the paintings Check out her phenomenal and inspiring artwork at: On this painting as well, I magjc up a lot of layers of clear and slightly blue tinted glazes, really popping the water up and off the canvas.
When he wrote this book, there wasn’t any book dedicated to classical hand drawn special effects animation. I am waiting while I learn from the subsequent paintings I’ve been doing before I revisit this one.
